Teacher writes letter to editor

"In a season of educational controversy, I would like to tout the praises of the exceptional program, STARBASE! New to Laramie County #1 and the STARBASE program, I can emphatically state that I have never experienced a more valuable program for elementary students in my 25 year teaching career.

My 5th graders cannot wait to get to STARBASE each week in the incredible National Guard facility!  STARBASE is a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education program for fifth graders that provides 25 hours of stimulating hands-on, minds-on, team based instruction. The technology rich military environment affords the student experience with first-hand “real-world” application of STEM skills to provide the underlying foundation of STARBASE. Percentage wise 65% are Title one classes, with 15% Hispanic, 5% African American, and 50% of the students on free and reduced lunch. I came to Cheyenne for this diversity and I am thrilled each week to observe the undeniable students’ growth in understanding, interest, and ability in Math and Science which leads to increased enthusiasm in pursuing further STEM education! STARBASE has served more than 800,000 students nationally over the past 20 years.

I have taught K-8th graders, currently teaching 5th grade at Goins Elementary in Cheyenne.  I am a graduate of UW, a Masters Graduate of the Science and Math Teaching Center of UW, a member of the National Science Teachers Association, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. I state this humbly to emphasize my passion for STEM education and the desperate need on a national level to support it!

Since we also learn American Government in our 5th grade, my class is now aware that we need at least 50 of our 100 national Senators, to recommend the Department of Defense continue to fund this low cost investment. This program is truly one the brightest spots in Cheyenne as well as across the nation. Senators, if you read this, “SAVE our STARBASE”, please!

And if you could please PRINT this letter, we could also apply our immediate writing standards of synthesis and opinion through this WyomingTribuneEagle Letters to the Editor!
